Tell us a little bit about Moxie Gear and how it got started.
I wanted to start my own and wanted a business that could really help women in a way that no other company was. Personal protection has always been important to me and I have given safety and personal security tips to my friends for years, so it only made sense to start a company that I could help other women with their safety while helping women build their own business as well.
I knew there was a need for women to be armed with the knowledge and tools they need to protect themselves from those wanting to do them harm. Every 26 seconds a violent crime occurs in America. One in five women will be sexually assaulted at some point in their lives. To me, these numbers are too high and I do not want to be anyone’s next victim.
Moxie Gear is a direct sales party plan company. We are providing less than lethal self-defense weapons designed for women. What better way to learn about these type of products than by having fun in the comfort of your home surrounded by your closest girlfriends? I know many women feel intimidated going into a gun shop staffed with men, and do not feel comfortable asking them questions to determine what self-defense options would best suit them. That is why I went with the direct sales business model, so that independent consultants could help women evaluate their needs.
Moxie Gear offers stun guns, pepper spray, defensive keychains, and more. This October, we introduced a line of conceal carry products for women. Our network of women loves to share ideas on personal safety and to help each other learn more about self-defense. We started in the summer of 2014 and are seeing tremendous growth already. There is a ton of excitement with every new person we meet and introduce to Moxie Gear.
Moxie Gear offers a home-based business opportunity for women – tell us more about this.
Moxie Gear offers women the chance to own their own business and sell self defense supplies to other women. There is a small consultant kit fee to start and after that, you can network through home parties, special events, self-defense seminars and classes, etc.
What are the startup costs for becoming a consultant, and what does it include?
For only $99 (plus shipping and tax) you get an assortment of business supplies, catalogs, and order forms. You get a nice bag with the Moxie Gear logo filled with three pepper sprays, two stun guns, three keychains, and a personal alarm. You also receive training materials. There are add on kits and discounts on demo items available as well. We offer regular training and support as well.
What has been the most difficult lesson you have learned as an entrepreneur?
When I first started, I thought I could just take my idea and it would be easy to get everything together, but it has been harder and more time consuming that I expected. I’ve had to learn to prioritize tasks and work more efficiently.
What advice would you give direct sales consultants on how to build a great business?
Keep at it. There will be highs and lows, but persistence pays off. Stay organized and stay in touch with your customers. Remember to be a friend first to your customers, hostesses, and downline.
What is your number one tip for booking more home shopping parties?
Be persistent in those that express an interest. Always keep your calendar with you so that you can mark dates down. Make the party fun for guests, and rewarding for the hostesses, and you will book parties off of parties.
How do you manage all of your personal and business activities?
I am very lucky to have a super supportive husband that helps around the house and helps with our boys, a three year old and a six month old. I do as much as I can during naptime and after the kids go to bed.
